  • Onbeskryflike Genade

    Onbeskryflike Genade

Oor hierdie boek: Stefaans Coetzee se pa was ’n alkoholis.

  • My First Wild Island Adventure

    My First Wild Island Adventure

In July 2009, Manser set another world first when he became the first person to circumnavigate the world’s fourth largest island, Madagascar, by kayak - also alone and unaided. This colossal journey, which saw him paddle 5000km in eleven months, was, he said, considerably more demanding, both physically and mentally. Conquering extreme loneliness whilst enduring treacherous conditions like pounding seas, cyclones and an unrelenting sun which, combined with salt water, almost pickled him alive. During his circumnavigation he had many memorable close encounters with Madagascar’s marine life – humpback whales breaching metres away from his kayak, giant leatherback turtles gliding alongside him and even having his boat rammed by a shark. Riaan travelled around Madagascar during a period of extreme political turmoil & he landed up in prison 5 times, the last time being 3 nights on suspicion of carrying out mercenary activities. In April 2010, Manser’s efforts were rewarded with his second accolade, “Out There Adventurer of the Year 2009” and “Around Madagascar on my Kayak”, his book recounting his amazing feat, also received acclaim.

  • Mamkhize: My World My Rules

    Mamkhize: My World My Rules

    1 review

Shauwn ‘Mamkhize’ Mkhize is a larger than life personality who, like her father and brother before her, is loved and misunderstood in equal measure. Her combination of political and business acumen runs in her family, and so is her ability to garner the sometimes-grudging admiration of those who have followed her rise to fame and fortune in the democratic dispensation. In her memoir, Mamkhize: My World, My Rules, she shares the details of her cloistered but privileged childhood, which was torn asunder by the assassination of her father and the subsequent quest by her brother to avenge his death. She tells the story of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission from her unique vantage point, as a family member of a victim. As a young accounting graduate freshly returned from an overseas experience, Shauwn lands what initially seems to be a dream job with a multinational corporation that had sponsored her training abroad. It soon dissipates into disappointment - work that receives insufficient pay and she bravely ventures into business. In this book, she dispels the urban legends about her wealth, family, marriage and subsequent divorce. She reflects on the much-publicized story of her reinvention as Mamkhize, the soccer boss, and shares the lessons that she has learned from the experiences that life has given her. A woman with incredible agency, Mamkhize allows the reader a glimpse into her family life and her formative years. She illuminates how they have shaped the woman that she is today. Not one to reveal every single trick of her trades (after all, she is the business), Shauwn Mkhize manages to regale without spoiling her aura of mystique. While touching the reader with her love for her parents, siblings and children, this memoir displays the dexterity with which she navigates modern life while striving to maintain a sense of tradition that keeps her grounded.

    Sex, lies & Stellenbosch

'Poker night had started off as a legitimate monthly card game; it was Frans who'd turned it into "poke-her" night. He'd been going to a gentleman's club in the city for quite some time. It was he who had suggested that they spice up their regular boys' night, assuring everyone that it was discreet and upmarket; at a price, of course. They were wealthy enough to buy discretion and they were all keen to bring some excitement into their lives. Being in a group somehow made it more acceptable, should their wives ever find out. So, poke-her night it became. It was, as most of these clubs were, at an undisclosed address in Cape Town.' Sex, Lies & Stellenbosch uncovers what really goes on behind closed doors in the seemingly upstanding community of Stellenbosch, one of South Africa's wealthiest small towns, home to 3 400 dollar millionaires (before they invested in Steinhoff shares). Written as fiction to protect the innocent, the book exposes the explosive dark truths of the Winelands' elite. All is revealed through Jen, wife of John Pearce, a renowned wine farmer and businessman. Jen stumbles upon her playboy husband in a compromising position with his sexy wine rep, Patty. Jen is forced to choose between leaving her marriage, jeopardising her standing and stability in the community or turning a blind eye to his infidelity. On the day of the discovery, Jen books herself into a luxurious spa, using her cheating husband's credit card, and serendipitously meets Claudia, a psychologist. This chance meeting helps Jen make sense of her crumbling world. She is betrayed by friends and bolstered by unlikely allies.

  • Night Trains

    Night Trains

On the night trains, the last stop was always hell. The price exacted from across the African sub-continent for South Africa's stalled 20th century industrial revolution is - in human terms - still largely hidden from history. It was the people of southern Mozambique, bent double beneath the historical loads of forced labour and slavery, and then sold-off en masse as contracted labourers to the new coal and gold mines of the Witwatersrand by a Portuguese administration intent on securing a guaranteed volume of rail traffic for its east coast port, that paid the highest price for the development of South Africa?s primary industry. An iniquitous inter-colonial agreement for the exploitation of ultra-cheap black labour in the extractive industries was only made possible through the use of the steam locomotive on the trans-national railway linking Johannesburg and Lourenco Marques. The privately-operated, nightly labour trains running between Booysens and Ressano Garcia left deep scars in the urban and rural cultures of black communities whether in the form of popular songs, such as Stimela and Shosholoza, or in a belief in nocturnal witches' trains that captured and conveyed zombie workers to the region's most unpopular places of employment. By tracing the up- and down-rail journeys undertaken by black migrants over half a century it is possible to reconstruct how racial thinking, expressed logistically, reflected the evolving systems of segregation and apartheid. Mozambican migrant labour formed an integral part of a largely hidden, parallel universe that created the wealth of 20th century South Africa and some of the deepest roots of an on-going tragedy lie, to this very day, besides the rails of the Eastern Main Line.

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER From the creator of the wildly popular xkcd.com, hilarious and informative answers to important questions you probably never thought to ask. Millions visit xkcd.com each week to read Randall Munroe's iconic webcomic. Fans ask him a lot of strange questions: How fast can you hit a speed bump, driving, and live? When (if ever) did the sun go down on the British Empire? When will Facebook contain more profiles of dead people than living? How many humans would a T Rex rampaging through New York need to eat a day? In pursuit of answers, Munroe runs computer simulations, pores over stacks of declassified military research memos, solves differential equations and consults nuclear reactor operators. His responses are masterpieces of clarity and hilarity, complemented by comics. They often predict the complete annihilation of humankind, or at least a really big explosion.

    Ride of a Lifetime

'One of the best business books I’ve read in years.' BILL GATESTHE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERA SUNDAY TIMES BOOK OF THE YEAR 2019The CEO of Disney, one of Time’s most influential people of 2019, shares the ideas and values he embraced to reinvent one of the most beloved companies in the world and inspire the people who bring the magic to life. Robert Iger became CEO of The Walt Disney Company in 2005, during a difficult time. Morale had deteriorated, competition was intense, and technology was changing faster than at any time in the company’s history. His vision came down to three clear ideas: Recommit to the concept that quality matters, embrace technology instead of fighting it, and think bigger—think global—and turn Disney into a stronger brand in international markets. Fourteen years later, Disney is the largest, most respected media company in the world, counting Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm and 21st Century Fox among its properties. Its value is nearly five times what it was when Iger took over, and he is recognized as one of the most innovative and successful CEOs of our era.In The Ride of a Lifetime, Robert Iger shares the lessons he’s learned while running Disney and leading its 200,000 employees, and he explores the principles that are necessary for true leadership, including: Optimism. Even in the face of difficulty, an optimistic leader will find the path toward the best possible outcome and focus on that, rather than give in to pessimism and blaming. Courage. Leaders have to be willing to take risks and place big bets. Fear of failure destroys creativity. Decisiveness. All decisions, no matter how difficult, can be made on a timely basis. Indecisiveness is both wasteful and destructive to morale. Fairness. Treat people decently, with empathy, and be accessible to them. This book is about the relentless curiosity that has driven Iger for forty-five years, since the day he started as the lowliest studio grunt at ABC. It’s also about thoughtfulness and respect, and a decency-over-dollars approach that has become the bedrock of every project and partnership Iger pursues, from a deep friendship with Steve Jobs in his final years to an abiding love of the Star Wars mythology.“The ideas in this book strike me as universal” Iger writes. “Not just to the aspiring CEOs of the world, but to anyone wanting to feel less fearful, more confidently themselves, as they navigate their professional and even personal lives.”

    Mozambique

Now in its eighth edition, Bradt's Mozambique remains the most established and sole standalone guide to this alluring African country. In-depth coverage of wildlife, history, culture, and diving and snorkelling is complemented by invaluable, up-to-date practical advice on travel and accommodation, presented in an easy-to-navigate geographical structure . Originally written by Philip Briggs, this new edition has been updated by Africa experts Huw and Kate Hennessy, authors of several previous Bradt guides.Mozambique is a country of two halves. The tourism-savvy south offers romantic tropical beaches, luxury lodges and world-class diving, plus the tree-lined capital of Maputo, a city oozing Afro-Mediterranean flair. By contrast, the less-developed north is one of Africa's last frontiers, with excitingly vast game reserves and idyllic coastal panoramas that entice intrepid travellers and those hankering after barefoot luxury. With its national park set-up expanded and refurbished, Mozambique looks set to reclaim its standing as one of Africa's top safari destinations. Moreover, although one of the continent's fastest developing tourist countries, it still offers opportunities to experience 'quintessential Africa'. As Mozambique approaches 50 years since independence, development boosted by one of Africa's highest economic growth rates and a swift resurgence following 2019's devastating cyclone are drawing tourists back to a forest-clad interior descending to 2,500km of pristine, palm-fringed coastline. Bradt's Mozambique reveals a country dotted with natural, historical, cultural, and architectural wonders that reflect a history that fuses exploration, trade, and culture. Highlights include the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ilha de Moçambique, a 16th-century Arab and Portuguese trading post; ancient rock art at Chinhamapere; adventurous journeys by train and Arab dhow; the birdlife of Mount Namuli, accessed from the tea-plantation town of Gurué; surfing in Tofo; and diving or snorkelling in biologically rich seas, including around Bazaruto, home to some of Africa's last remaining dugongs, five of the world's seven endangered sea turtle species, and two thousand species of fish. Whether you are a culture vulture or wildlife enthusiast, a watersports enthusiast or honeymooning couple, the in-depth coverage and practical advice for all budgets means that Bradt's Mozambique has everything you need to plan a thrilling holiday.

  • Second World War

    Second World War

A magisterial, single-volume history of the greatest conflict the world has ever known by our foremost military historian. The Second World War began in August 1939 on the edge of Manchuria and ended there exactly six years later with the Soviet invasion of northern China. The war in Europe appeared completely divorced from the war in the Pacific and China, and yet events on opposite sides of the world had profound effects. Using the most up-to-date scholarship and research, Beevor assembles the whole picture in a gripping narrative that extends from the North Atlantic to the South Pacific and from the snowbound steppe to the North African Desert.Although filling the broadest canvas on a heroic scale, Beevor's The Second World War never loses sight of the fate of the ordinary soldiers and civilians whose lives were crushed by the titanic forces unleashed in this, the most terrible war in history.

  • Salemstraat

    Salemstraat

Almal wil weet: Is Emilee verantwoordelik?Huishoudings is verdeeld oor Emilee. Stefanus, oud-weermagman, glo byvoorbeeld vas Emilee is ʼn regte “kortgat korporaal”, terwyl sy vrou weer sê dat MJ ʼn “vreemde man” is.
