Lights that Dance in the Night

In this wonderfully festive picture book, Yuval Zommer imagines the Northern Lights' fleeting journey from space to Earth and how they weave a special magic for the animals and people living in the frozen lands below.

"The poetic rhyming text of The Lights That Dance in the Night pairs beautifully with the dance of the Aurora Borealis, and deftly mixes the science behind how the lights are formed with cultural significance and fable. In one spread, indigenous Arctic peoples enjoy the lights and we hear how they feature in their storytelling tradition; and in another, polar bears, and Arctic hares frolic together under the night sky. Author-illustrator Yuval Zommer's unique artistic style brings the wintery landscapes to life in this wonderfully atmospheric book.", "What an exquisite book this one is! The lights swirl and twirl and tumble and whoosh in beautiful brushstrokes across every stunningly illustrated page, taking you on a journey of magic and wonder to the ice-capped Arctic. With each page of lilting, lyrical language, and exquisite artistry, their magic weaves its way into your heart and the heart of your little one. With its message of light bringing hope in the dark, this book is the most sublime of stories for a winter's evening.", "Wild cats and Arctic foxes frolic beneath starry skies, as whales, puffins and polar bears lift their voices in song. Nature is always at the fore of Zommer's work, and this book is a sparkling wintry masterpiece.", "The Northern Lights shimmering across the Arctic skies are one of the most elusive but memorable sights in the world. This beautifully lyrical book not only imagines how the phenomenon came from space to earth, but evokes its spellbinding effect on the humans and creatures who bask in its glow.", "With an ethereal beauty to both the words and the illustrations, heartfelt messages about the peace that comes from togetherness, and the dangers of global warming radiating subtly from the pages, Zommer puts the living world at the heart of his powerful storytelling, bringing the very youngest children a lyrically written, resonant and utterly charming story. A verbal and visual treat to treasure for yourself… or as a memorable gift for others."
