Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832) made important contributions in the fields of ethics, law and political thought. Through his two great principles, the "greatest happiness" principle and the "self-preference" principle, Bentham was devoted to the production of a complete, rational code of law for a state engaged in promoting the general happiness. Bentham scholarship has concentrated on certain aspects of his thought; this collection reflects that bias, focusing on Bentham's analyses of sovereignty, the structure and functions of government, liberty, representative democracy, the nature and role of public opinion, and the nature, application and basis of the principle of utility. The majority of the articles were published since 1950, but those of his contemporaries show how the remarkably homogeneous tradition of discourse on Bentham evolved and how his ideas became politically influential. The contents are arranged thematically: life, influence and perspectives on his thought; philosophy, psychology and religion; ethics; law; politics; economics; panopticon, feminism and other topics.
