Stimulated by the growth in litigation on product liability and associated personal injury, research into communicating warnings effectively has increased during the 1990s. This text addresses the major issues in theory, research and applications of warnings and risk communication, bringing together the international authorities in the field. The first section of the book introduces the area in general terms, describing its importance and presenting a brief history. A cognitive processing framework is also described which organizes the research literature presented in subsequent chapters. The second section describes the different methods of intermediate warning effectiveness. Behavioural compliance as well as measures of intermediate processing stages are outlined. The third section describes the research model used in describing the information processing framework. This serves not only to organize the literature but also provides explanations and prediction. In the second half of the book chapters provide practical guidance on warning development, including regulations, industry standards and general guidelines for effective design. This is supported by necessary test procedures
