First Person Singular is a patch of intense variety and colour... Murakami's protagonists tend to be introspective, ordinary men who find themselves confronted by women and unusual situations. It is as much their reactions to events as the events themselves that make his books so brilliant, Mind-bending...touches beautifully on love, solitude, childhood memories, dreamlike scenarios, invented jazz albums and meditations on music. In true Murakami tale-telling perfection, it's devourable, I never tire of re-entering Murakami's world, finding his Proustian ability to covey the texture of memory exhilarating, and his fatalistic heroes and their deadpan response to the melodramatic and the outré soothing, These stories are unmistakably Murakami's for the way they traffic in his signature themes of time and memory, nostalgia and young love... each one [story] has insights that remain with you long after they are done, The hallmarks of Haruki Murakami's longer fiction are all here; an enigmatic eeriness which hints at the supernatural in everyday situations, a love of jazz and baseball, and the nourishing nostalgia of pop music
In 1978, Haruki Murakami was twenty-nine and running a jazz bar in downtown Tokyo. One April day, the impulse to write a novel came to him suddenly while watching a baseball game. That first novel, Hear the Wind Sing, won a new writers' award and was published the following year. More followed, including A Wild Sheep Chase and Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, but it was Norwegian Wood, published in 1987, that turned Murakami from a writer into a phenomenon. In works such as The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, 1Q84, What I Talk About When I Talk About Running and Men Without Women, Murakami's distinctive blend of the mysterious and the everyday, of melancholy and humour, continues to enchant readers, ensuring his place as one of the world's most acclaimed and well-loved writers.

Vier komplekse verhoudings, bietjie misdaad, baie liefde
I am amazed by this book. It is a murder mystery with suprising twists. It follows a 17 year old Pippa. Pip wants to do her EPQ school project on the Andie Bell case and throughout her project she discovers new leads that might lead her to the killer if he hasnt already been found. There isn't really romance in this book. Though I am rooting for a couple in mind. This book has loss and gain and is a must read. This book was really popular on bookyok a couple of years ago and I regret not reading it earlier. Theres also a show based on this book. Suitable for all ages really.
Debra drops (or is dropped?) into Uruk in Sumer in 2000BC. It is a shock certainly, four thousand years ago is a long time, but noone has any time for ninnies here. In between working in the fields and hand-in-hand with the 6-year-old Leqi, she listens to ancient Sumerian stories about Gilgamesh, the precursors to the bible stories, and the material that has proved to be fundamental to our literary tradition. Given the opportunity to go to school (after all she can write in a funny script already) She persuades the head priest to allow her to take young Leqi with her. The tension lies in the penurious circumstances in Uruk for peasants and the financial demands created by schooling, beautifully crafted between two narrative threads - daily life vs. the literary tradition. In the final moment of the book they slam together in a way that brought tears to my eyes. I couldn't recommend it highly enough.
