Deep Code
Combining a bent lyric perception with a fragmentation redolent of French cubism, Coletti portrays contemporary urban experience, from power relations and personal loss to nights among city dwellers recording their convivial distress, glad and dissolute at once. Part teddy bear fleeing the cultish outlines of the American northwest, part Apollinaire in Brooklyn, Coletti culls his materials from the ether and assembles them into resonant structures at once intensely personal and strangely universal--a little outrageous--both confusingly lovely and apt in their ungainliness. Lines like "I'm nearly home is what everyone says" and "triceratops & the bad glue / that made us good friends," only begin to demonstrate the astute linguistic eye and deft line break sense of John Coletti. Praise for Deep Code: "A sonic surrealist typewriter clacks in rhythm across Colletti's brow. Read it in his sweet-eye glance: poetry grams of tender touch. Tuff cookie meat! & mystery. Shit is electric wire awesome stuff."----Thurston Moore "In Deep Code, we walk hand-in-hand with a street smart and tenderhearted city boy who, wanting "ALLLLLLL the experience", is immersed and so immerses the reader in contemporary cacophonies where "things collide" at a pace both expansive and measured. John Coletti expertly props our ears to what's striking and dare I say beautiful in the terrifying realities of this world. This book is "at ease / with not being at ease" and that, for me, is a guidepost. Reading Deep Code is like eating some kind of perfected pop rocks--all the colorful action, and just as true, but without the saccharine hangover."--Alli Warren "Deep code is a theory of expressive subterfuge performed as piecemeal continuities. Its poems are distressed & fine like all the chances we forget we're free to make for one another, edged to mellow like the contours of a party felt in general & intimate perception."--Dana Ward About the Author: John Coletti is the author of the book Mum Halo (2010) and the chapbooks Same Enemy Rainbow (2008) and Physical Kind (2005). With Anselm Berrigan, he is the author of the limited edition Skasers (2012).He has served as editor of The Poetry Project Newsletter and co-edits Open 24 Hours Press. Other projects include a collaborative print with artist Kiki Smith, a chapbook collaboration with Shana Moulton, and a libretto for Excelsior, an opera composed by Caleb Burhans commissioned by Chicago's Fifth House Ensemble which premiered in 2013.

Walking Backwards
Collected poems from America's searching and thoughtful philosopher-poet . . . There's somethingComforting about rituals renewed, even adolescents' pipe dreams: They'll find out soon enough, and meanwhile find their placesIn the eternal scenery, less auguries or cautionary tales Than parts of an unchanging whole, as ripe for contemplationAs a planisphere or the clouds: the vexed destinies, the shared life, The sempiternal spectacle of someone preaching to the choirWhile walking backwards in the moment on a warm spring afternoon. John Koethe's poems--always dynamic and in process, never static or complete--luxuriate in the questions that punctuate the most humdrum of routines, rendering a robust portrait of an individual: complicated, quotidian, and resounding with truth. Gathering for the first time his impressive and award-winning body of work, published between 1966 and 2016, Walking Backwards introduces this gifted poet to a new, wider readership.

Ardboe Poet: The Poetry Of John Coleman (1855 - 1938)
John Coleman's poetry was first published from 1929 - 1938 in his local weekly paper, The Mid Ulster Mail. The poems have been recovered from the paper's archives and brought together in one book for the first time. The great majority of the poems have not been available to view until now. His thoughts cover the issues of the day and many of the poems are still relevant in to-day's world; especially in Ireland. This project is primarily for the extended Coleman family but as they are enjoyable and educational the poems are now available to be shared with anyone. The subjects covered are his beloved Lough Neagh and Ardboe, Ireland and the Exiles, The Seasons, Memories of Childhood, Religious Thoughts, Life and Death, Commentary of the Day, War and Story Telling.

Couldn't You?
Couldn't You? brings together most of John Hall's poems for the page written since the publication of Else Here in 1999 - and writing for the page here assumes black ink on white rectangular paper, but with the permissions that come with poems to engage that visual space of meaning with different tactics, ranging from the minimal and laconic forms of 'Gloss' and 'Harder than Ease' to the loquacious blocks of 'Here and There'. In each case the margins are part of the poems: the not writing of the margins confronting the writing with its omissions and limits, with its repetitive silences or obsessive utterances. What can poems - as poems - know? And is this the same as asking how many nos are bound up with a poem's knowing anything? As the poem says, avoidance and repetition.

Tau & Journey to the End
Two long-lost volumes from the classic Beat period. Tau is Philip Lamantia's mystical second collection of poems, originally slated for publication in 1955, but suppressed by the poet due to his evolving religious beliefs. Journey to the End contains the poems of the legendary John Hoffman (1928-1952), whose poems were read by Lamantia in 1955 at the 6 Gallery reading where Allen Ginsberg debuted "Howl." Lamantia's closest friend, a character in Jack Kerouac's Dharma Bums, and the inspiration for two lines of "Howl," Hoffman moved between San Francisco and New York before his death in Mexico at the age of twenty-four. This volume includes biographical notes and Lamantia's commentaries on Hoff man's poetry.

Complete Poems
Here is the first reliable edition of John Keats’s complete poems designed expressly for general readers and students.Upon its publication in 1978, Jack Stillinger’s The Poems of John Keats won exceptionally high praise: “The definitive Keats,” proclaimed The New Republic—“An authoritative edition embodying the readings the poet himself most probably intended, prepared by the leading scholar in Keats textual studies.”Now this scholarship is at last available in a graceful, clear format designed to introduce students and general readers to the “real” Keats. In place of the textual apparatus that was essential to scholars, Stillinger here provides helpful explanatory notes. These notes give dates of composition, identify quotations and allusions, gloss names and words not included in the ordinary desk dictionary, and refer the reader to the best critical interpretations of the poems. The new introduction provides central facts about Keats’s life and career, describes the themes of his best work, and speculates on the causes of his greatness.

Collected Shorter Poems
Chronologically the first, Collected Shorter Poems, Vol. 1 is editorially the third of John Matthias's three-volume Shearsman Collected Poems. It includes the poems that first made Matthias's reputation-experimental work like 'Turns: Toward a Provisional Poetics and a Discipline'; politically activist poems from the 1960s and '70s such as his elegy for the Kent State University students killed by the Ohio National Guard; poems written from his fifteen years of living off and on in Suffolk; poems articulating an aesthetic of play-and-game like 'Clarifications for Robert Jacoby'; along with several epistolary poems, explorations of place, and family-oriented lyrics, such as the often translated and reprinted 'Poem for Cynouai.' This volume joins Collected Shorter Poems, Vol. 2 and Collected Longer Poems in bringing together all of the poetry, with the exception of Trigons (available separately from Shearsman), that Matthias wishes to preserve.

John Keats: Major Works
This authoritative edition was originally published in the acclaimed Oxford Authors series under the general editorship of Frank Kermode. It brings together a unique combination of Keats's poetry and prose - all the major poems, complemented by a generous selection of Keats's letters - to give the essence of his work and thinking. In his tragically short life Keats wrote an astonishing number of superb poems; his stature as one of the foremost poets of the Romantic movement remains unassailable. This volume contains all the poetry published during his lifetime, including Endymion in its entirety, the Odes, 'Lamia', and both versions of 'Hyperion'. The poetry is presented in chronological sequence, illustrating the staggering speed with which Keats's work matured. Further insight into his creative process is given byreproducing, in their original form, a number of poems that were published posthumously.Keats's letters are admired almost as much as his poetry and were described by T. S. Eliot as 'certainly the most notable and most important ever written by any English poet'. They provide the best biographical detail available and shed invaluable light on Keats's poems. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Joao
Joao is a book of sixty-two sonnets recounting twelve years of the life of a poet who travels widely, encountering friends and loves, translators and, sometimes, famous authors. Its protagonist is Joao of eGoli; his christian name is Portuguese for "John" and his epithet - "Place of Gold" - is that of his birthplace, Johannesburg, in Zulu. The linked poems reveal Joao not only as a cosmopolitan traveller, but also as someone sensative to others preconceptions to how they are also haunted by history. The book's concluding poems evoke a geneology for Joao's restlessness: Cape Town-born parents, Cape Malay friends, a Brazilian uncle, and the great-grandmother from an island, Tristan da Cunha, in the middle of the Atlantic. In this book of richly dense sonnets John Mateer presents us with the experiences of someone who travels the world, like so many of us, to understand himself and his place in a shared, global history.

Poems of William Cowper: Volume II: 1782-1785
This volume includes some of Cowper's finest works, among them such well-known short poems as `The Poplar-Field', `Epitaph on a Hare', `On the Loss of the Royal George' (here restored to the form in which Cowper wrote it, and accompanied by the music for which it was written), and `The Diverting History of John Gilpin' which, two years after its first anonymous publication in a newspaper, suddenly achieved huge popularity in a series of public readings. It alsocontains Cowper's masterpiece, The Task - one of the most approachable of the great English poems. Cowper's blank verse is a supple instrument, capable of every effect, from the parody-georgic on the growing of cucumbers to the visionary conclusion of Book VI. At the centre of the poem stands the poethimself, presented with wry humour and deep poignancy. The texts are based on manuscripts as well as early editions of the poetry, and are supplied with textual annotation and commentary. In the case of The Task, this is the first fully annotated edition for over a hundred years; its commentary relates the poem to the period in which it was written more fully than any previous edition.

Tennis Court Oath
John Ashbery writes like no one else among contemporary American poets. In the construction of his intricate patterns, he uses words much as the contemporary painter uses form and color- words painstakingly chosen as conveyors of precise meaning, not as representations of sound. These linked in unexpected juxtapositions, at first glance unrelated and even anarchic, in the end create by their clashing interplay a structure of dazzling brilliance and strong emotional impact. From this preoccupation arises a poetry that passes beyond conventional limits into a highly individual realm of effectiveness, one that may be roughly likened to the visual world of Surrealist painting. Some will find Mr. Ashbery's work difficult, even forbidding; but those who are sensitive to new directions in ideas and the arts will discover here much to quicken and delight them.A 35th anniversary edition of classic work from a celebrated American poet who has received the Pulitzer Prize, the national Book Award, and the national Book Critics Circle Award. John Ashbery's second book, The Tennis Court Oaths, first published by Wesleyan in 1962, remains a touchstone of contemporary avant-garde poetry.

Poems of St. John of the Cross
San Juan de la Cruz, the 16th-century Spanish mystic, is regarded as one of Spain's finest poets. Passionate, ecstatic and spiritual, his poems are a blend of lyricism and mystical thought. This book presents a translation of the complete poems, with the aim of recreating the religious fervour of St John's work. This dual-language edition provides the original Spanish from the "Codex of Sanlucon de Barrameda", with facing English translations. The work concludes with two essays - a critique of the poetry and a short piece on the Spanish text that appears alongside the translation - as well as brief notes on the individual poems.

Works of John Dryden, Volume VII
Dryden's last three years of published works begin with Alexander's Feast and end with Fables, his largest miscellany of poetical translations. Alexander's Feast, like the earlier Song for St. Cecilia's Day (Works, III), was commissioned by the Musical Society for performance at its annual tribute to sacred music. The Fables included selections from Homer, Ovid, Boccaccio, and Chaucer. Extensive and detailed notes to these translations show readers how well Dryden succeeded in transmitting the styles and the very sounds of his originals. Volume VII ends with a section of miscellaneous pieces published at other times, including Dryden's only known Latin work. The presentation of the writings in this volume, like that of the entire twenty-volume series, is a tribute not only to Dryden but also to the editors who have guided it through five decades.

Songs and Sonets of John Donne
There is perhaps no superior edition of Donne’s Songs and Sonets than Theodore Redpath’s wonderful annotated volume. Out of print for a decade, the book is reprinted here in its second, revised edition. The book’s twofold origin is evident on every page of Redpath’s limpid commentary: it arises partly out of a life of scholarship and partly from Redpath’s experiences and concerns as a teacher. The volume contains notes “on every point likely to cause difficulty to a reader of average intelligence.”

John Greenleaf Whitter's The Abolitionist Poems
John Greenleaf Whittier was born December 17, 1807, in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Growing up on the family farm his education was little and informal. A Quaker, Whittier worked passionately for abolitionist newspapers and magazines. He was active in support of National Republican candidates he himself became a delegate in 1831 to the national Republican Convention in support of Henry Clay. In 1832 he ran for Congress but was unsuccessful. Legends Of New England In Prose And Verse, was published in 1831 followed in 1833 by Justice and Expedience which urged immediate abolition. In 1834 he was elected as a Whig for one term to the Massachusetts legislature. During his editorship of the Pennsylvania Freeman, in May 1838, the paper's offices were burned to the ground and sacked during the destruction of Pennsylvania Hall by a mob. Whittier founded the antislavery Liberty party in 1840 and ran for Congress in 1842. In the mid-1850s he began to work for the formation of the Republican party; supporting the presidential candidacy of John C. Fremont in 1856. He helped to found Atlantic Monthly in 1857. Although Whittier was close friends with Elizabeth Lloyd Howell and considered marrying her, in 1859 he decided against it. Whittier supporters would never claim he was a poet of the first rank but all would concede that his poems on abolition give him a vaunted place for those efforts.
