Expanding the Boundaries of Transformative Learning
Transformative learning involves experiencing a deep, structural shift in the basic premises of thought, feelings, and actions. It is a shift of consciousness that dramatically and permanently alters our way of being in the world. Such a shift involves our understanding of ourselves and our self-locations; our relationships with other humans and with the natural world; our understanding of relations of power in interlocking structures of class, race and gender; our body awarenesses; our visions of alternative approaches to living; and our sense of possibilities for social justice and peace and personal joy. The editors of this collection make several challenges to the existing field of transformative learning - the first is to theoreticians, who have attempted to describe the nature of transformative learning without regard to the content of transformative learning. The editors argue that transformative learning theory cannot be constructed in a content-neutral or context-free way. Their second challenge, which assumes the importance content for transformative learning, is to educators as practitioners. The editors argue that transformative learning requires new educational practices consistent with the content. Arts-based research and arts-based teaching/learning practices are one example of such new educational practices. Education for the soul, or spiritual practices such as meditation or modified martial arts or indigenous peoples' forms of teaching/learning, is another example. Each article in the collection presents a possible model of these new practices.

One-on-One Language Teaching and Learning
With only one learner, it is possible for the teacher to give serious attention to principles of second language acquisition such as motivation, error treatment, and learner autonomy, which are more difficult to address in classroom learning. This book combines theory with practical suggestions, making it invaluable for language tutors.

Stimulating Student Interest in Language Learning
This book explores the issues and concerns many language teachers have in not just helping able students to learn a foreign or second language but more importantly how to get reluctant learners to become interested in language learning. Tin proposes ‘interest’ as an important construct that requires investigation if we are to understand second language learning experiences in a modern globalised world. The book offers both theoretical explorations and empirical findings arising from the author’s own research in the field. Chapters demonstrate how various theoretical and empirical findings can be applied to practice so as to raise the awareness of the importance of interest in language learning and teaching. For teacher trainers and educators, researchers, and practising language teachers, this comprehensive study provides tools to stimulate student interest in language learning for successful language learning.

Learning and Writing in Counselling
`This is a very practical "how to" book, written for students on counselling skills courses. It is intended to help them through the various problems faced by people returning to education, perhaps after a long gap.... how useful this book could be to students who [are] confused by the increasingly academic requirements of counselling training courses... I would recommend this book as a companion for anyone who is starting a course with little or no experience of academic expectations. It is written in a friendly and reassuring style′ - Counselling, The Journal of the British Association for CounsellingThis book provides a comprehensive overview of the tasks and the processes of learning and writing required on counselling training courses and in the practice of counselling. The authors cover the entire period of training, from choosing a course to the early stages of professional practice. The first part of the book discusses learning skills, methods and approaches, looking at, for example, the context for learning, motivation and experiential learning. Part Two focuses on course requirements, the form of written assignments - how to complete them and the difficulties that can be encountered - as well as the basics of writing, including language, form and style. The final part looks at the involvement of practising counsellors in continued learning and the kinds of writing that they may develop throughout their careers.

Learning, Capability Building and Innovation for Development
Today, a large number of scholars studying development understand this process as involving learning and capability building. Capability building is an active, not a passive, process. It requires a purposeful effort from the learner's side, with support and commitment on allocation of time and resources toward learning activities. This process implies the possibility of failure as well as success, as we also learn from failures. A global cast of academics and policy makers examines economic development as a process of learning and technological accumulation, showing how economic development is a process involving creative destruction. While markets and market competition play major roles in structuring the development process, non-market institutions and government policies matter.

Learning Policy
The emergence of learning policy is traced through a concise history of postwar UK education and training. The 1944 settlement is seen to be replaced by a new settlement marked by the 1988 Education and the 1992 Further and Higher Education Acts. This also signals a change from the classic, postwar welfare state to a postwelfare, workfare or "contracting state". This new state form is illustrated by examining the new system of "Foundation" and "Lifelong Learning" from primary to postgraduate schools.

Phenomenology of Learning and Becoming
In this text, the history of phenomenological research on learning is synthesized and brought forward into the areas of existential learning, the development of enthusiasm about learning (from childhood through adulthood), and paradigmatic creative experience. Original research findings are derived using the Giorgi method of descriptive phenomenological analysis in psychology. The results, structural and eidetic in nature, are then integrated from a holistic developmental viewpoint: that of Existential-Humanistic Self-Development Theory (EHSDT). An evolving developmental partnership between learning and creativity emerges as the proper conceptual frame for considering optimal growth and the relative maturity of situated becoming oneself (i.e., the process of self-cultivation). The resulting perspective is supported by cutting edge trends in neuroscience and related to pedagogy and education.

Teaching and Learning on Screen
What stories are told about teaching and learning on TV and in film? And how do these stories reflect, refract and construct myths, anxieties and pleasures about teaching and learning? This collection looks at how pedagogy is represented on screen, and how TV programs and films translate pedagogic ideas into stories and relationships. International in scope, with case studies and analysis from the UK, US, Australia, Turkey and Brazil—the book adopts a critical stance in relation to the ways in which theories of learning and myths about education are mobilized on screen. Teaching and Learning on Screen: Mediated Pedagogies provides a stimulating addition to the field of media and cultural studies, while also promoting debate about particular pedagogic models and strategies that will contribute to the professional development of educators and those involved in teacher education.

Ipsative Assessment and Personal Learning Gain
This innovative book offers a new approach to assessment in which learners can follow their own learning journey using cumulative feedback or measurements of distance travelled from different starting points. Education currently mirrors the values and practices of a highly competitive world with testing, grading and monitoring of standards becoming its driving forces. Competition may stimulate high achievers, but may also demotivate or even damage the rest. Ipsative feedback (on progress) and personal learning gain measurements are often hidden. A range of global case studies from school and higher education illustrate four themes: the benefits of ipsative feedback, making good use of learning gain measurement, the challenges of implementing these novel practices and how to combine new approaches with traditional assessment methods. Exploring the difficulties of turning the tables on hierarchies based on achievement and whether it is fair to elevate progress, this book will be the start of conversations about a future that is not obsessed with testing and grades.

Business Driven Action Learning
The contributors to this book are from US and European multinationals and consultants who have been directly involved in integrating strategic business issues on the agendas of their top executives with the education and development of their best people. They have done this through business driven action learning executive programs and processes. The key assumption of business driven action learning is that in today's competitive environment, individual and organizational learning must be greater than the rate of change. Business driven action learning is used by companies to explore and implement business opportunities, gain useful insights from outside the company, change company direction and culture, and develop both individual and group learning skills of high potentials and senior executives. This volume has gathered together some of the world's best practices. Business driven action learning differs from the more classical forms of action learning developed by the Reg Revans school in the UK, and later by the action reflection approach, because it ensures that a business focus is maintained while at the same time integrating individual executive development and teamwork skil
