Work, Organisation and Labour in Dutch Society
Research on labour market, labour relations, quality of work, human re- sources management, organisation ~f work and related topics has always been an important element in the activities of SISWO. The Netherlands' Universities Institute for Coordination of Research in Social Sciences (SISWO), is a national agency that initiates and supports, both scientifically and organisationally, research endeavours on a great variety of themes. This is done by organising discussion groups, congresses and conferences, expert meetings, newsletters and publications. For the field oflabour and organisation, WESW A, theN etherlands' Uni- versities Working Committee on Social Science Research of Labour and Organisation, is the inter-university network that, in close cooperation with SISWO, unites experts from Dutch universities. WESWA and SISWO are convinced that an overview of the Dutch state of the art, in English, will be welcomed by an international audience. This state of the art work on research into labour and organisation in The Netherlands was edited by Gerard Evers, Bert van Hees and Joop Schippers.I do hope that this book will receive the attention both within and outside our country that it deserves.

Modeling for Government and Business
This volume has been composed to commemorate the day, 25 years ago, that Dr. P. J. Verdoorn delivered his inaugural lecture after his appointment as professor of economics at the Netherlands School of Economics at Rotterdam. The prompt and enthusiastic reactions by several members of the profession on our request for a contribution illustrates the fact that Verdoorn is held in high esteem by those who worked with him and those who are acquainted with his work. We thank all the contributors for having helped us to realize our plan to honour Verdoorn with the publication of this 'liber amicorum'. Verdoorn was appointed part time professor of business statistics, market research and marketing in 1952. He held this post until 1969. In that year he started lectures closer related to his work as deputy director of the Central Planning Bureau: general economic research. He became full professor of macro-economic policy in 1975. Verdoorn showed a great versatility in all the fields on which he worked. Without exaggeration he may be characterised as one of the most many-sided economists in the Nether lands. However much the subjects he studied may have varied, the methods he applied show persistent characteristics: theories are formulated to yield testable hypotheses which, when they can be maintained, are made operatio nal for policy purposes. In all these phases of a research program Verdoorn showed a high level of inventivity. A combination of rigour and imagination enabled him to maintain a constant stream of high-quality publications.

Netherlands international direct investment position
For the Netherlands, commercial and cultural contacts across the borders are of vital importance. The world's eighth trading nation holding pride of place in many market segments, the Netherlands is highly dependent on developments worldwide. Through other economic ties as well, our country is firmly embedded in the world around us. Until the Second World War, the methods used in the Netherlands to collect data about these international relations were less than adequate. As a result, the compila tion of a consistent overview in the form of a balance of payments was barely feasible in those years. After the War this situation was improved markedly, and the Bank was assigned a key role in the compilation of the balance of payments. This role entails that the Bank must also answer the many requests for information about the underlying data and that, by analysis of these data, it must come to policy recommendations. It is our experience - almost daily - that international direct in vestment is among the subjects which have been attracting major attention in recent years, both at home and abroad.

Productivity, Technology and Economic Growth
Productivity, Technology and Economic Growth presents a selection of recent research advances on long term economic growth. While the contributions stem from both economic history, macro- and microeconomics and the economics of innovation, all papers depart from a common viewpoint: the key factor behind long term growth is productivity, and the latter is primarily driven by technological change. Most contributions show implicitly or explicitly that technological change is at least partly dependent on growth itself. Furthermore, technology appears to interact strongly with investment in physical and human capital as well as with changes in historical, political and institutional settings. Together these papers are an up-to-date account of the remarkable convergence in theoretical and empirical work on productivity and growth over the past decades. The first part deals with the characteristics of growth regimes over longer periods, ranging from 20 years to two centuries. The next four chapters study the determinants of productivity growth and, in some cases, productivity slowdown during the last quarter of the twentieth century. The final five chapters focus on the role of technology and innovation as the key determinants of growth. Productivity, Technology and Economic Growth is, therefore, a welcome collection for academic scholars and graduate students in economics, history and related social sciences as well as for policy makers.

Determinants of Economic Growth
Determinants of economic growth: An overview Thijs de Ruyter van Steveninck, Nico van der Windt, and Maaike Oosterbaan Netherlands Economic Institute What causes economic growth? Why have some countries grown much faster than others? Why do some countries not grow at all, or even experience negative (per capita) growth rates? What can governments do to raise the growth rates of their country? These questions were discussed at a conference on March 23 and 24, 1998, organized by the Netherlands Economic Institute (NEI) on behalf of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This book contains the proceedings of the conference. Economic growth is widely considered as a necessary (though not sufficient) condition for poverty alleviation. During the past two decades, scholars and researchers have found a renewed interest in thinking about economic growth, and advances in the understanding of economic growth have taken place. On the one hand, the theoretical understanding of growth has progressed on various fronts, including endogenous technological innovation and increasing returns to scale; the interaction of population, fertility, human capital, and growth; international spill-overs in technology and capital accumulation; and the role of institutions. On the other hand, the increasing availability and use of data sets has given a large incentive to empirical research on cross-country growth, following the path-breaking work ofBarro (1991).

Trends in managerial and financial accounting
In August, 1976 the research seminar 'Decision-making in business' was organized at Nijenrode, The Netherlands School of Business. More than fifty scientists and practitioners from nine countries presented research papers in one of the six discussion groups. Some of them also presented some of their ideas in front of a large mixed audience at a one-day symposium. Many of the papers presented at Nijenrode were of such a high quality that the decision to publish a selection of them was an easy one. At the same time the new series Nijenrode studies in business was initiated. All who were involved, the policy committee of the N ijenrode studies, the advisory and editorial board of the series, the publisher, and the organizing committee of the seminar and symposium, acclaimed the idea of publishing three volumes in the new series. A collection of eleven papers could be grouped under the title Trends in managerial andfinancial accounting. Another collection will be published as volume 2 of this series under the title TI'ends in financial decision-making, while volume 3 will consist of papers exploring the theme Trends in business ethics. The books are intended for those who are interested in new developments in the decision-making area. They are especially suitable for graduate or advanced undergraduate courses: volume 1 in managerial or financial accounting courses; volume 2 in courses on managerial finance, capital budgeting or decision making; and volume 3 in courses on business ethics or related fields.

Price Effects in Input-Output Relations: A Theoretical and Empirical Study for the Netherlands 1949–1967
1.1. Pre Ziminary remarks Input-output analysis is one of the most extensively used tools of economic science. It has been introduced by Leontief (1941) who assumed that inputs into a production process of a particular sector of economic activity is a constant fraction of the output of that process in physicaZ terms. National account statisticians, however, record the inputs and outputs of sectors of economic activity in money flows. If those flows were voZumes (evalu ated at constant prices, pertaining to a certain base year) they could represent the physical amounts Leontief dealt with. Then, the Leontief assumption turns into constancy of ratios of volumes of inputs to volumes of output. For an over view of (traditional) input-output analysis we refer to section 4.1.1. In practice, however, input-output tables in volumes are seldom available; since as a rule they are expressed in monetary vaZues (i.e. evaluated at current prices). In that case one generally assumes that the ratios between inputs (in value terms) and outputs (in value terms) are constant. In appendix B to chapter 4 we prove that the two variants described above can be couched in terms of the (neo-classical) theory of costs subject to a production function.

Die profiele strek van Hennie Aucamp to Henriette Grové (A–G).

Teleworking
This up-to-date and comprehensive assessment of teleworking is based upon a conference at Brunel University, which was sponsored by BT and the European Commission. The book features contributions from a range of international and interdisciplinary perspectives. As well as an original analysis of the theoretical context of the post-industrial and postmodern world, it also contains detailed empirical studies of telworking in a number of different countries. Contributors explore many of the main issues in teleworking drawing on insights from business, economics, sociology and information systems. These include: conceptualizing teleworking; the management of spatial, temporal and cultural boundaries; the possibility of the virtual organization; integrating teleworking into an organizational perspective. This work provides an introduction to teleworking and a contribution to the debate on the future of the labour market.

Manufacturing in the New Urban Economy
In large cities in developed countries, the share of manufacturing has declined drastically in the last decades and the share of service has grown as many manufacturing firms have closed or moved to lower-cost locations. The process of deindustrialization is often seen as part of the inevitable shift towards a knowledge based economy and urban economies come to rely on research and development, financial services, tourism and the creative industries. This book looks at the changing link between manufacturing and knowledge-based activities in urban regions. The authors develop a new framework drawing on insights from organization studies and regional economic literature looking at various international case studies in Western and Eastern Europe, South America and Asia.
