Life Esidimeni
When writer Harriet Perlman and photographer Mark Lewis set about documenting the lives of the families whose loved ones had been so horribly killed in the Life Esidimeni tragedy, they were determined to honour the dead, and to recognise the sufferings of those left behind. They travelled, often long distances to people’s homes, and listened to their stories. Family members brought out a picture that they selected of their brother, parents, sister or child who had died Each picture held meaning for those left behind. They met with families grappling with the unimaginable loss of loved ones. Their heartbreaking stories, accompanied by powerful photographs, forge a deep connection with the victims. These portraits are not just faces on a page, but a testament to the human cost of this tragedy. This book pays tribute to the people who had someone they loved cruelly taken from them and tells the story of those who fought back. In late 2015 and 2016, South Africa witnessed a horrific human rights tragedy. 144 people entrusted to the public health system died from neglect, starvation and torture. This book delves into this heartbreaking event, the Life Esidimeni tragedy, offering a powerful narrative built on the stories of those most affected. But this book is not merely a chronicle of loss; it is a celebration of resilience and courage. It shines a light on the tireless efforts of organisations like SECTION27, SADAG, and the Life Esidimeni Family Committee. These unsung heroes fought relentlessly for truth, justice and accountability, holding those in power responsible for their actions. It is also a stark reminder of how horribly wrong things can get with an arrogant, callous and unaccountable political leadership. But a measure of justice has been achieved. Presided over by former Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke, families were awarded damages for the loss of their loved ones in the arbitration in 2021. Then on 10 July 2024, Judge Mmonoa Teffo pronounced her findings from the Inquest. But the fight for true justice continues. The book explores the ongoing struggle for better mental healthcare in South Africa and the urgent need to ensure such a tragedy never happens again. This is a call to action, urging readers to engage with the ongoing fight for mental health reform.

Love Letter to the Many
South Africa was the hope of the leftist world when it emerged from apartheid in 1994. It had an impressive and rich tradition of left politics. At the heart of post-apartheid democracy-making was a revolutionary nationalist ANC, the oldest Communist Party in Africa, the SACP, and one of the most militant labour union federations in the world, COSATU. Yet, today South Africa finds itself at a crossroads. It can either devour itself through inequality engendered social conflict; plunge further into racial polarisation due to the resurgence of exclusionary nationalist and neo-fascist politics; or risk being overcome with failure as socio-ecological systems collapse and the country gets overwhelmed by the many persistent crises. Many are deeply concerned about what South Africa has become and where it is headed. This book explains through a political economy/ecology analysis why and how the degeneration, delegitimation and crisis of national liberation politics has happened. Moreover, Left politics have failed. The world historical defeats of Soviet socialism, social democracy and revolutionary nationalism also became defeats for the South African left. This was not inevitable. At the same time, neoliberal dogma’s primacy of the sovereignty of capital and markets, over the state, people and nature, has also not worked. The grand and deep criminalized experiment has reached its limits. Its product: a hollow and criminalized market democracy predicated on an unviable society while producing a dialectic of reaction; the new extreme right. In these informed writings there is pushback against the neoliberal turn, Zumafication, emergent neofascism, the fraud of the National Democratic Revolution and the normalisation of the dangerous climate contradiction. At the same time there is a consistent transformative intellectual praxis, against the grain of defeat, that embraces the opportunity of left renewal initially inside the SACP but extending beyond. These arguments document 27 years of working with trade unions, township communities, waste pickers, unemployed peoples’ movements, informal traders, social movements and the global left to reconstruct the left imaginary beyond the traditional left, reform versus revolution, binary. These writings provide critical resources for transformative left politics and points to new frontiers for further elaboration. Finally, this volume curates a small part of post-apartheid history. It adds to the invisible archive of the left and takes its readers into a world that has been feared, misunderstood or caricatured. This volume is a contribution to decolonial South African thought. It is shared as a gift to the many, specifically to the next generation, so that they continue to struggle for and build an emancipated country and world in the present, before it is too late. Through a self-reflexive transformative politics, informed by an ethics of care, another future is possible.

Dear Mothman
Winner, LGBTQ+ Middle Grade Lammy Award (Lambda Literary Award)Robin Gow’s acclaimed middle grade novel in verse about a young trans boy dealing with the loss of his friend by writing to his favorite cryptid, Mothman Moving and lyrical, Dear Mothman is a story about finding belonging and hope in the most unexpected places. A few months ago, Noah’s best friend and the only other trans boy in his school, Lewis, passed away in a car accident. Feeling lost and alone, Noah starts writing letters to Mothman, Lewis’s favorite cryptid, wondering if he would understand how Noah feels. At first, Noah isn’t sure whether he actually believes in Mothman—not like Lewis did. But when strange things start to happen around his wooded home, Noah wonders whether there might be something to the stories. He decides to make his science fair project about Mothman, despite his teacher’s urging to study something “real.” As Noah’s mind begins to open, so does his world. He makes friends with a group of girls in his grade and finally feels like he belongs. But most people are not so accepting, and he has no evidence to prove that Mothman exists. With the science fair looming closer, Noah decides to risk everything, trek into the woods, and find Mothman himself. “A hauntingly moving examination of grief, friendship, and identity, reminiscent of my favorite classics. Robin Gow has a magic with words, stirring and shining a light on the deepest of emotions, leaving behind goosebumps (and tears) for Noah’s story. This book is a gift.” —Kacen Callender, author of the National Book Award winner King and the Dragonflies

Architecture of Modern Empire

Untethered
Sometimes family is found in the most unlikely of places . . .In the small college town of Troy, Alabama, amidst the backdrop of 1967, Katia Daniels lives a life steeped in responsibility. At the Pike County Group Home for Negro Boys, she pours her heart into nurturing the young lives under her care, harboring a longing for children of her own. Katia's romantic entanglement with an older man brings comfort but also stirs questions about the path she's chosen. The weight of her family's history bears down on her; a twin brother is missing in action in the heart of the Vietnam War. Having lost her father to cancer, Katia took up the mantle of caretaker, ensuring her mother and brothers were looked after. Her sense of duty extends to the boys at the group home, creating a web of obligations that stretches her emotional bandwidth thin.Amidst a power struggle at work with the board, Katia finds solace in the pages of romance novels and the soothing melodies of Nina Simone. When Seth Taylor, a familiar face from her high school days, reenters Katia's life, he brings with him a breeze of nostalgia and a reminder of a time when her dreams felt less tethered. As their friendship rekindles, Katia grapples with the idea of making choices for herself, even as the realization that she can no longer have children weighs heavily on her. This novel is a poignant tale of a woman torn between the demands of her heart and the responsibilities she's shouldered for so long. Set against the backdrop of a changing South, this novel delves into the complexities of love, family, and self-discovery in a time of transformation and upheaval.
