“The Dead Zone” is one of the most surprising Stephen King novels I have read so far. I expected something more traditionally supernatural, but what I found was a thoughtful, unsettling and deeply human story about a man whose life is reshaped by tragedy. Johnny Smith wakes from a coma to discover he has lost years of his life and gained an ability he never wanted. King handles Johnny’s recovery with a sensitivity I didn’t expect. His grief, confusion and isolation feel painfully real, and the people around him are written with the same care. Herb’s quiet love and Vera’s unraveling faith add emotional weight to the story.

What elevates the novel is the political thread that emerges in the second half. Reading it now is genuinely eerie. The rallies, the theatrics, the crowd’s hunger for someone who promises to shake things up, even if he is clearly dangerous, all feel disturbingly familiar. King captures the appeal of chaos in a way that feels timeless.

Love its simplicty

Daar is talle raaisels en 'n groot misverstand in hierdie romanse

Daar is meerdere raaisels betrokke in Salma Swanepoel se nuutste Romanza, Raaiselman. Daar is ’n raaiselagtige man wat by die skoonheidsalon van Alana en haar vriendinne opdaag vir behandelings. Daar gebeur ook vreemde dinge wat die reputasie van hulle salon kan skade berokken. Om die intrige aan te help, gebeur die snaakse dinge juis in die tyd wat Roux begin opdaag vir behandelings.
Nodeloos om te sê, word daar erg bespiegel en gesoek na verklarings. Hierdie feitestel het die skrywer ook knap gebruik om ’n baie oorspronklike en lekker misverstand te skep wat die potensiaal het om die nuwe verhouding heeltemal te kelder.
Een klein punt van kritiek: dit is myns insiens altyd ’n risiko om name te kies wat verwarring kan veroorsaak by die leser. Daar is byvoorbeeld ’n mevrou Egling en mevrou Neveling (p.14) wat my twee maal laat lees het om seker te maak daar is twee persone ter sprake. Om verder ’n rits karakters te hê met “a”-klanke, Alana, Sanja, en Adel, tart ook die drukkers- en skrywersduiwel. Op bladsy 85 lees ons van Lara in plaas van Alana. My vermoede is dat hierdie fout misgekyk is in die redigering, juis omdat daar soveel name is wat byna eenders is.
Die klein mistasting doen gelukkig geen afbreuk aan die heerlike romanse en die gelukkige einde nie.

Lieflike bundel van taalmusiek wat oud en jonk sal fassineer

Ek was totaal betower deur Spienekelientjies, die splinternuwe bundel saamgestel deur Antjie Krog. Om dit te beskryf as “Taalmusiek vir kleintjies” is heeltemal in die kol, want lees jy die versameling van gedigte en prettige rympies, is die ritme opgesluit in die rymende teks werklik opvallend. Die voorwoord bevat belangrike inligting oor die voordele wat kinderryme inhou, soveel as sewe punte wat ek nou nie alles hier gaan herhaal nie.

Gebruik jy die QR-kode, aangebring in die boek, om te luister na die skitterende voorlesings deur Antjie Krog, gaan jy nog méér gefassineer word. Bang word vir Antjie Somers, of vir Die wilde wolman jammer kry as hy uitrafel.
Die keuse van gedigte en rympies is interessant. Daar is vertaalde werke, ou gunstelinge waarvan jy skielik die woorde onthou of wat getoonset is, alles netjies gegroepeer in vyf afdelings, naamlik Trippe trappe trone, S staan vir superslim, Spienekelientjies, Ons eie en Help my!
My kleinkinders is ongelukkig ver maar hierdie bundel gaan ek nie onder my oë laat uitgaan nie. Dit gaan veilig gebêre word vir tye wat ons saam kan lees en rym en geniet. Daar is drie illustreerders, naamlik Roelien Immelman, Willem Samuel en Diek Grobler wie se werk die teks lieflik komplimenteer.
Ek het ’n e-boek ook onder oë gehad, maar dit was veral die gedrukte weergawe, uitgegee deur Lapa Uitgewers, waarvan ek die meeste gehou het.

Wessel werk verbete daaraan om vir Sofie te beskerm al is sy ongeneë

’n Boek deur Elsa Winckler sal jy binne bladsye kan herken selfs sonder insae in die skrywer se naam of die buiteblad. ’n Skuilplek vir Sofie is geen uitsondering nie. Van meets af aan is daar konflik tussen kolonel Wessel Jordaan en Sofie Olivier, maar ook onbehoorlike aantrekkingskrag.
Die skrywer se huidige reeks, waarvan hierdie die vierde aflewering is, bied buiten die gewone hormone, struweling, familie wat inmeng en vooropgesette idees oor die huwelik, nog ’n goeie dosis spanning. Die rolspelers is lede van Bosman Sekuriteite en as sulks is hulle aan gevaarlike situasies blootgestel.
Wessel probeer verbete om vir Sofie te beskerm terwyl ’n lid van sy span in die polisie inligting lek wat hulle telkens in die spervuur laat. Hulle is op die spoor van ’n berugte en gevaarlike swendelaar wat in Kaapstad opgemerk is en die situasie is vinnig lewensbedreigend. Die feit dat Sofie, ook ’n agent van Bosman Sekuriteite, ongeneë is om sy hulp te aanvaar, kompliseer sake nog verder.
As jy graag die reeks in volgorde wil lees, kyk uit vir Om Karlien te beskerm, Om Isla op te pas en Om Leah veilig te hou, nou opgevolg deur ’n Skuilplek vir Sofie.
