Het twee misdade in die dorp dalk 'n verband?

Bloedbande is die vierde boek in ’n reeks oor die speurder, Adriaan Kruger. Die skrywer was die baie gewilde Eleanor Baker, en is onder die skuilnaam, Alex Muller, uitgegee. Sedert Human & Rousseau die reeks in splinternuwe baadjies begin uitgee het in 2025 volg ek die wel en weë van Adriaan Kruger, wat in Bloedbande bevorder word na kaptein. Adriaan, sy vrou Karien en haar tweeling sussies, voel al soos ou bekendes wat tuis hoort op my boekrak.
Moorde maak soos voorheen deel uit van die storielyn, maar sonder grieselrige detail. Daar word eerder deeglik aandag gegee aan die unieke persoonlikhede van die rolspelers. Daar is ook genoeg intrige om die leser tot aan die einde aan die wonder te hou. Selfs wanneer daar ’n belangrike deurbraak gemaak word in die ondersoek, kies die skrywer om die leser nog ’n rukkie in die duister te laat. Hierdie reeks is ’n bewys van die veelsydigheid van die skrywer, wat ewe tuis was met ernstige prosa, jeugverhale, liefdesverhale en speurverhale.
Bloedbande het die eerste maal in 2001 verskyn, en hoewel dit kronologies sin maak om in volgorde te lees, kan dit wel individueel sin maak. Die reeks bestaan uit Die vyf susters, Die rooi angelier, Drie misdade in ’n knoop en Bloedbande. Gawe nuus is dat die skrywer ’n vyfde verhaal geskryf het oor Adriaan Kruger. Ek hoop dat Hotel Bergsig ook ’n heruitgawe gaan sien in die nabye toekoms.
Human & Rousseau is ’n druknaam van Jonathan Ball uitgewers.

Pret vir laerskoolkinders

Dieselfde prettigheid van grappe, raaisels en woordspeletjies wat ek in Hannes Barnard se Allamapstieks raakgeloop het, is weer in Allegaartjie te vind. Zinelda McDonald se kreatiewe illustrasies vra ook weereens om ingekleur te word, dus kan kinders maar die inkleurpotlode byderhand hou om hulle besig te hou tydens die vakansie.
Hannes was onlangs op Lekkerleesboekrak die Skrywer van die maand. ’n Interessante feit wat ons daar gehoor het, was dat hy kan “rap”. Hy bewys dit in sy kinderboeke deur self kletsryme te skryf, en boonop kan jy, deur die kode te skandeer, luister hoe hy die bonusrym, Allegaartjie, voordra. In Allamapstieks, klets hy deur die storie, Giep se groot geheim.
Allegaartjie sluit af met nog ’n aflewering oor die avonture van die leerders van die Skool vir rampspoedige talente. Julle sal onthou dat Hannes teksbydraes gelewer het vir hierdie skreeusnaakse bundel stories. Lesertjies gaan dit geniet om te lees waarom Chadoné beskou word as ’n Gholfzilla.
Hierdie oulike boek vir laerskoolkinders is ’n publikasie van Lapa Uitgewers se afdeling vir Jeug- en kinderboeke.

Volop raaisels, prettige stories en aktiwiteite vir die jongklomp

Allamapstieks rol so gemaklik oor die tong en val só lekker op die oor - en dit is Hannes Barnard se prettige boek vir laerskoolkinders wat saam met sy tweelingboetie, Allegaartjie, op die rakke is. Ons het hierdie skrywer leer ken as jeugverhaalskrywer van formaat, maar hy kwyt homself baie goed van die taak om jonger lesers te vermaak.
Ek het gehou van sy idees om kinders aan die skryf te kry met “Wat as” vrae. Daar is plek gelaat vir die kind om sy of haar storie neer te pen. Daar is ook twee langer stories om te lees, een waaroor daar ook ’n koerantberig geskryf is. Lees self, dit is regtig baie oorspronklik. En boonop is daar ’n lekker lang kletsrym, Giep se groot geheim.
Verder is daar grappe, raaisels, en woordspeletjies en illustrasies wat ingekleur kan word. Dit word uitgegee deur Lapa Kinder- en jeugboeke en kan ’n kinderhart bly maak in die vakansie.

'n Storie oor tweede kanse

Daar is ’n bekende uitdrukking wat dikwels toegeskryf word aan Richard Bach, die skrywer van Jonathan Livingston Seagull, hoewel dit nie met sekerheid geverifieer kan word nie. Dit lui dat as jy iets of iemand liefhet, jy dit moet vrylaat. As dit na jou toe terugkeer is dit joune. As dit nie terugkom nie, was dit nooit joune nie. Ek skat Ewald het so gevoel toe hy uit Rinelda se lewe verdwyn het sodat sy haar drome kon najaag.
Daardie opoffering het ongelukkig nie vir een van die twee goed uitgewerk nie. Baie water moes in die see loop voordat hulle verhouding na jare weer op dreef kon kom. Selfs toe sy uiteindelik weer syne word, het ’n venynige en arrogante antagonis ’n finale stok in die speke kom steek.
Hierdie storielyn sou ’n lys van karakters vooraf, kon regverdig. Ek het nogal gesukkel om kop te hou met die familieverband tussen die talle familielede en hulle verband met Beukes Eiendomme en die werknemers aldaar.
Serenade vir die hart is Corné van Rooyen se verhaal oor tweede kanse, nie net vir die held en heldin nie, maar ook vir die Beukes familie. Dit is ’n Romanza in die sub-genre, Modern.

Raw, Hilarious, Heartbreaking and Unforgettable!

A Qualified Disappointment is one of the best South African books I have ever read.

From the first page to the last, it takes you on an incredible emotional journey full of joy, heartbreak, laughter, hope, and everything in between. Prev writes with remarkable honesty and vulnerability, never shying away from the harsh realities of growing up Indian while navigating identity within the LGBTQIA+ community. His voice is raw, authentic, and deeply human.

The book feels like an unexpected blend of Spud, a coming-of-age romance, memoir, and sharp social commentary, all wrapped in brilliant wit and laugh-out-loud humour. What makes it truly special, though, is its distinctly South African Indian perspective and a voice that is so rarely represented with this level of authenticity and heart.

It’s funny, moving, insightful, and beautifully written. More than just a great story, it’s a work of art that stays with you long after you’ve turned the final page. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
